Echo, reverb, and delay — the technical differences

These three terms describe related but distinct acoustic phenomena. Echo is a clearly audible repeat of a sound — you speak, and after a noticeable gap (typically 50 milliseconds or more), you hear the sound again. Echo requires a large reflective surface at sufficient distance for the delay to be perceptible as a separate event. Think shouting in a canyon.

Reverb (reverberation) is a dense cloud of reflections where individual repeats are too close together to distinguish. It's the 'room sound' you hear in any enclosed space — hundreds of reflections arriving within milliseconds of each other, blending into a continuous wash. The characteristic hollow, bathroom-like quality of untreated room recordings is reverb.

Delay is an intentional audio effect used in music production — a precise, rhythmic repeat of a signal. It's not typically a problem in voice recordings unless someone is using a delay effect. Why echo is harder to remove than background noise
