How to Make a Phone Call Recording Clearer

Your phone call recording sounds muffled, compressed, or noisy — and you need to make the conversation more intelligible.

Phone call audio has fundamental technical constraints: traditional telephony uses 8kHz sample rate with 4kHz maximum frequency response. Modern VoIP calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal) use HD Voice or Opus codec at 16kHz sample rate with 8kHz frequency response. Both are lower quality than studio recording, but both can be improved. **Understanding what you have:** - Traditional phone/PSTN: 300Hz–3,400Hz frequency range, 8kHz sample rate - VoIP/HD Voice: 50Hz–7,000Hz frequency range, 16kHz sample rate - Low-quality VoIP (poor connection): heavy packet-loss artifacts, robotic/garbled speech **Step 1 — Obtain and extract the recording:** For iPhone: voice memos, third-party recording apps, or call recorder apps.
