How to Reduce Echo in a Room for Recording

Your recordings have a hollow, roomy sound with audible echo, making them sound amateurish regardless of microphone quality.

Echo in recordings is caused by sound reflecting between parallel surfaces (walls, floor, ceiling) before reaching the microphone. The time delay between the direct sound and reflections creates the perception of 'room' — and the stronger and longer those reflections are, the worse your recording sounds. Hard surfaces (drywall, hardwood, glass) reflect almost all sound energy. Soft surfaces (carpet, curtains, foam) absorb it. **Room selection — the most effective fix:** Small rooms with irregular shapes (bookshelves, furniture) have natural diffusion.
