Where Teams stores recordings and how to download them

Microsoft Teams recordings save to different locations depending on the meeting type. Channel meetings save to SharePoint, in the channel's Files tab under a 'Recordings' folder. Non-channel meetings (ad-hoc, scheduled from calendar) save to the organizer's OneDrive for Business, in a 'Recordings' folder. Teams recordings use MP4 format with audio encoded in AAC.

To download a recording, navigate to the SharePoint or OneDrive location, select the file, and click Download. You can also access recordings through the Teams chat where the recording link was posted after the meeting. For organizations with Stream integration, older recordings may be stored in Microsoft Stream Classic — check with your IT administrator if you can't locate a recording in OneDrive or SharePoint.

Teams audio compression and its impact on recordings

Teams uses the Satin audio codec at up to 48kHz stereo for high-quality audio, falling back to the Silk codec at lower bitrates when bandwidth is constrained. During poor network conditions, Teams aggressively reduces audio quality to maintain call stability — this keeps the conversation going but degrades the recording quality permanently.

The compression manifests as slightly muffled voice quality, reduced high-frequency detail (consonants become less crisp), and occasional warbling artifacts during network transitions. These compression artifacts sit on top of any environmental noise in the recording, compounding the quality issues. Post-recording cleanup can address the noise component but cannot fully reverse codec compression — which is why starting with the best possible audio settings matters.

Common audio problems in Teams recordings

Cleanup workflow for Teams recordings

1. 1Download the MP4 recording from OneDrive, SharePoint, or the Teams chat link. Verify the file plays correctly and contains the full meeting.

Teams includes built-in noise suppression with three levels: Auto, Low, and High. Access this through Settings > Devices > Noise suppression. High suppression is aggressive and can clip the beginnings of speech; Auto is the best default for most users. Teams also supports AI-based echo cancellation and automatic gain control.

For meetings you plan to record, encourage participants to use headphones — this eliminates echo, which is the single hardest audio artifact to fix in post-production. If you're the organizer, mention audio quality at the start of recorded meetings. Organizations with compliance recording enabled should note that compliance recordings may use a different audio pipeline than standard Teams recordings.
