How Google Meet recordings work

Google Meet recordings save automatically to the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in a folder called 'Meet Recordings'. The recording format is MP4 with audio encoded in AAC. Recordings include all participants' audio mixed into a single track — there's no option for separate per-participant audio tracks like Zoom offers.

To access recordings, open Google Drive and navigate to the Meet Recordings folder, or click the recording link that Meet emails to the organizer after the meeting ends. Download the MP4 file to your computer before uploading it for audio cleanup. Meet recordings are available for download shortly after the meeting ends, though longer recordings may take additional processing time on Google's side.

Google Meet's built-in noise cancellation and its limits

Meet includes built-in noise cancellation that runs during live calls, powered by Google's machine learning. It handles steady background noise (fans, HVAC) reasonably well in real time. However, Meet's noise cancellation operates under the same constraints as all real-time processors: limited processing time per audio frame and limited model complexity to avoid adding latency.

The practical limitations show up in recordings. Meet's cancellation reduces noise during the live call but doesn't perfectly eliminate it — the recording often contains residual hum, echo from participants not using headphones, and ambient noise that the real-time filter partially suppressed but didn't fully remove. Variable noise (dogs, doorbells, construction) is particularly challenging for Meet's real-time system. Post-recording AI cleanup handles what the live filter missed.

Common audio issues in Meet recordings
