How to Reduce Noise in Logic Pro

Your Logic Pro recordings have background noise — room hum, hiss, HVAC, or ambient noise that bleeds into the audio between and during takes.

Logic Pro has two built-in noise reduction tools: the Noise Gate plugin (Dynamics > Noise Gate) and the legacy Denoiser (accessible via Option-click in the Audio FX menu). For most recordings, using both together produces better results than either alone. **Method 1 — Noise Gate (for dynamic noise during silence):** The Noise Gate closes the audio signal when it drops below a threshold — silencing the noise floor during pauses between words and at the start/end of takes. 1. Click the Audio FX slot in the channel strip → Dynamics → Noise Gate 2. **Threshold:** Start at -30dB. Signals below this level are gated (silenced) 3. **Reduction:** Set to maximum negative value (-80dB or lower) to fully silence gated periods 4. **Attack:** 1–5ms for speech (fast open, natural) 5. **Release:** 100–200ms for speech (lets the tail of words through naturally) 6. **Hold:** 50ms minimum to prevent chattering on soft syllables 7. **Hysteresis:** -6dB (prevents the gate from fluttering open/close when signal hovers near threshold) Listen in solo mode and adjust the Threshold until speech passes freely but silence between words is gated cleanly. **Method 2 — Legacy Denoiser (for continuous background hiss/hum):** The Denoiser targets the continuous noise floor — unlike the Noise Gate, it works during speech, not just during silence. 1. Click an Audio FX slot in the channel strip 2. **Hold Option key** while clicking → this reveals legacy plugins 3. Select Legacy → Noise → Denoiser 4. Find a noise-only section of your recording 5. **Threshold:** Set to the peak level of the isolated noise section 6. **Reduce:** Start at 50%, increase until noise is gone without artifacts 7. **Noise Type:** Select 'Broadband' for consistent hiss; 'Tonal' for hum **Processing order:** Place Denoiser before the Noise Gate in the signal chain (top of the Audio FX list = processes first).
